Dr. Vancheswaran received her MD from New York Medical College School of Medicine after completing her Bachelors degree in microbiology, immunology, and molecular genetics from the University of California, Los Angeles. She has completed the first two years of her general surgery residency at Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla, NY and is taking two years of dedicated academic time to focus on basic science research in surgical oncology. At this time, Dr. Vancheswaran is working under the mentorship of Charlotte Ariyan, MD, PhD and will be affiliated with the lab of Dr. Alexander Rudensky, PhD. Her research focuses on overcoming mechanisms of immunotherapy resistance in melanoma with special interest in an oncolytic virus – talimogene laherparapvec (T-VEC), a novel intralesional therapy that shows promise in the setting of immunotherapy resistance. Dr. Vancheswaran has been pursuing a translational project using a mouse model of melanoma immunotherapy resistance to elucidate the influence of T-VEC on the anti-PD1 immunotherapy resistant tumor microenvironment. In addition, Dr. Vancheswaran has been studying the clinical outcomes of T-VEC administration in patients who have experienced disease progression on systemic immune therapist such as anti-PD1 or anti CTLA4 medications.
